How to Recognise a Lie

John 8:31-32 Jesus said to the Jews who believed in him, “If you continue to accept and obey my teaching, you are really my followers. You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” … Your father is the devil. You belong to him. You want to do what he wants. He was a murderer from the beginning. He was always against the truth. There is no truth in him. He is like the lies he tells. Yes, the devil is a liar. He is the father of lies.

Deception is all around us these days. Whilst editors and journalists have been putting their own spin on the so-called news for years, these days, because fake news is rampant, it’s becoming more and more difficult to spot the truth amidst all the lies.

And it’s not just in the world of news and information that we have this problem – it happens in our personal lives too. How often have you been manipulated by someone who purports to be a friend, but in fact just wants something out of you?

So … how do you identify a lie when it comes your way?

John 8:31-32 Jesus said to the Jews who believed in him, “If you continue to accept and obey my teaching, you are really my followers. You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” … Your father is the devil. You belong to him. You want to do what he wants. He was a murderer from the beginning. He was always against the truth. There is no truth in him. He is like the lies he tells. Yes, the devil is a liar. He is the father of lies.

So, according to Jesus, the way to spot a lie is to know the truth. The way to spot a lie is to listen to Him, to accept His teaching, to obey His teaching. Because the devil’s made sure that the world is saturated in lies. But those lies become more and more obvious, easier and easier to discern, when the truth of Jesus’ teaching fills your heart.

Follow Jesus. Accept and obey His teaching. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

That’s His Word. Fresh … for you … today.
