There Are Consequences

Romans 6:23 When people sin, they earn what sin pays—death. But God gives his people a free gift—eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Most of us just want to be left alone to live our lives just the way we want. Though doubtless our circumstances are quite different, yours and mine, we both get that. But that largely self-serving journey inevitably has consequences.

For almost 500 years, the Roman Empire was the dominant world power. No one could assail them. No one could defeat them. They were the top of the heap. One Caesar after another (and altogether there were over 35 of them), revelled in their comfort and complete authority. Yet eventually, the whole thing collapsed in a heap … the rise and fall of the Roman Empire.

How? Why? Answer: through political corruption and instability, economic mismanagement, military overreach. As the cracks appeared, various barbarian tribes seized the opportunity to attack them until, in 476 AD, the Germanic Chieftain Odoacer deposed the last emperor, Romulus Augustulus.

The bigger they are, the harder they fall. It doesn’t matter how successful we might be in our own eyes, how big and important (or not) we may be, this self-serving journey toward comfort and control always has consequences. And at some point or other, we’re all guilty of it … even emperors.

Romans 6:23 When people sin, they earn what sin pays—death. But God gives his people a free gift—eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Sadly, what’s coming for some – in fact, for most – is a fall. A big fall. An eternal fall. There are consequences. Absolutely there are. But God sent Jesus His Son to save you. Believe in Him. Live your life for Him.

Because God gives us this free gift – eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord.

That’s His Word. Fresh … for you … today.
