Eyes to See

James 1:5 Do any of you need wisdom? Ask God for it. He is generous and enjoys giving to everyone. So he will give you wisdom.

It’s really quite striking, when you stop and think about it, how much the negativity and challenges of the past, coupled with the pressures that we face today, tend to distort our sense of judgement … leading us to make decisions that all too often turn out for worse rather than better. And then, when we’re facing those consequences, we often don’t even realise that they come down to the choices we made.

I have a couple of good friends who are judges – one in the family court dealing with messy divorce and custody issues,  and the other in the children’s court dealing mostly with teenage crime.

I couldn’t imagine doing their job, because all too often the judgements they have to render in this imperfect world in which we live come down to the least worst outcome. That requires an incredible amount of wisdom –  the sort of wisdom that ordinary folk like you and me simply don’t have.

But truth be told, you and I do need wisdom – a lot of wisdom – to live our lives day to day; to make the sort of good choices that tend to lead, most of the time at least, to good outcomes.

James 1:5 Do any of you need wisdom? Ask God for it. He is generous and enjoys giving to everyone. So he will give you wisdom.

When you’re struggling for wisdom to apply to some relationship, some dilemma, some apparently intractable problem, isn’t that stunning news? The heart of God in the midst of that mess is filled with generosity, is overflowing with a desire to give, is enjoying the giving of wisdom.

Do you need wisdom? Ask God for it. He is generous and enjoys giving to everyone. So he will give you wisdom.

That’s His Word. Fresh … for you … today.
