In the Eye of the Storm
Psalm 46:1-3,10 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling … Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! (NRSV)
The stuff that life throws at us sometimes can be downright terrifying. Other times, it just seems to grind us down. Either way, what we really need is peace. Where, pray tell, do you find that?
When the stuff of life attacks the very fibre of your being, peace seems impossible to lay hold of. How can you have inner peace when your finances are crumbling, amidst a broken marriage, the tragedy of a wayward child, a devastating health prognosis?
More often than not, we try to think our way through, turning the problem over and over in our minds, tossing and turning in the night. How well has that worked for you in the past, hmm?
Here’s God’s take, His truth, His peace.
(NRSV)
The earth’s giving way, the mountains are falling into the sea, the ocean’s roaring, the ground’s trembling beneath your feet. You don’t find the solution to that on the internet. No! The place of peace isn’t in escaping those circumstances, but the place we need to be, you and I, is right there, in the stillness of the eye of the storm . Because that’s where God is.
Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!
That’s His Word. Fresh … for you … today.
